Silver Prints

The gelatin silver process was introduced by Richard Leach Maddox in 1871 with subsequent considerable improvements in sensitivity obtained by Charles Harper Bennet in 1878.  The gelatin silver print was a primary form of visual documentation in the 20th century.  Most of what exists today known as a ‘black and white’ photographic print is made using a silver-based process.

A well-made gelatin silver print can produce deep, rich blacks as well as render mid-tones and highlights with exceptional clarity.  Gelatin silver prints are made by taking pre-coated paper (still) available today, and exposing it to light by means of a photographic enlarger that shines a controlled light through a negative and onto the paper.  The aesthetic quality of a gelatin silver print is still preferred over many other means of photographic reproduction, and each print made in the darkroom is unique.

platinum prints

The platinum printing process was discovered in 1873 by William Willis.  This process produces a very delicate, long tonal range in the prints.  The addition of palladium displays a warmer tone in the image as well as enabling delicate highlights and deeper blacks.  Platinum prints are made by hand-coating a sheet of blank paper with a mixture of platinum metal salts in solution and a sensitizing agent, mating the negative to the coated paper and then exposing the paper to UV light in a contact frame.

An additional benefit of the process is exceptional long-term stability and archival life that only the ‘noble metals’ such as platinum and palladium can provide in a photographic print.  Galleries, museums and collectors recognize the intrinsic value of platinum / palladium prints, and appreciate them for their unparalleled beauty as well as long archival life when properly stored.  Early photography masters Imogen Cunningham, Edward Steichen and Edward Weston as well as many others utilized the platinum process as a way to express their artistic vision.
